Alternative Cold Summer Treats

Eating ice cream in the summer is an absolute must to cool off in the heat. But not everyone is into the traditional frozen treat. Some are allergic to dairy products or lactose intolerant while others are simply looking to avoid gaining those extra summer pounds.

Lactose intolerance is a condition where the body is unable to digest lactose products. Approximately 75 percent of the world’s population develops some degree of lactose intolerance.    According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, up to 90 percent of South Asians may develop the condition.  Lactose intolerance is three times more common amongst South Asians than other populations.  Conditions include upset stomach, nausea, cramps, gas and diarrhea.

For those who are lactose intolerant, there are ways to still enjoy ice cream without upsetting your stomach.  Anyone looking to just eat healthier, there are options for you too.  CitySaheli has tracked down some spots that offer either milk-based organic ice cream or purely non-dairy vegan desserts!

Stogo
The success of this East Village joint proves that ice cream doesn’t have to be milk-based in order to be delicious! Founded by restaurateur Steve Horn, actor Rob Sedgwick, ice cream consultant Malcolm Stogo, and magazine editor Gene Stone, Stogo promises to deliver the best desserts on earth while protecting it. The gourmet gelatos are organic, dairy-free and contain no refined sugars, animal products, preservatives, or artificial flavorings. Try the soy-based fudge brownie, cardamom pistachio, or pomegranate chocolate chip, indulge in the hemp-based raspberry, or treat yourself to a coconut milk-based pina colada cone!

Van Leeuwen
Family-owned Van Leeuwen artisan ice cream prides itself in using only three simple ingredients to create its creamy flavors: fresh hormone free milk from local farmers, egg yolks, and pure cane sugar. The cups and napkins are made from disposable sugar cane husks, the spoons and straws from corn husks, and one percent of the profit goes to protecting the Congo Mountain Gorilla! Good for the environment and good for your taste buds! Flavors vary from the traditional strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla to the more exotic ginger, gianduia, and red current. And if you feel really daring, try the new Earl Gray tea flavor! Add some zest with a $1 topping like whipped cream, hot fudge, cocoa nibs, caramel sauce, or walnuts.
