Attention curly hair girls: stop “blowfrying” your hair and embrace your beautiful locks. CitySaheli recently visited Devachan Salon in Soho and was amazed by the transformations of frizzy, lifeless hair into perfect ringlets of luscious curls. CitySaheli searched all over for the ultimate curly hair salon in New York City and all signs led us to Devachan. Stepping foot into the salon was like entering curly hair heaven: everyone in the salon possessed perfect curls – from the clients, to the stylists, to the coat check person.
Stylists here cut your curly hair while it’s dry, so they can look at the each curl as it naturally lands. The cut takes approximately an hour due to their meticulous method. Post-cut, the stylist washes your hair and teaches you how to care for those lustrous locks. The post-cut scalp massage is so relaxing, don’t forget to listen about caring for your new hair. (Don’t fret though – there’s a tutorial video on Devachan’s website.)
Devachan also has its own line of hair products, Devacurl. The company stands by the purity of their products. One of the main benefits of Devacurl – there are no sulfates in their cleansers, which means it is gentler on the hair. Sulfate is a harsh chemical that is typically used in most shampoos and household cleaning products.
Everyone who works in Devachan salon breathes and lives for frizz-free curls. CitySaheli’s stylist, April, carefully explained the philosophy behind curly hair and styling it. CitySaheli learned the following great tips from Devachan.
- After washing and conditioning the hair, do NOT use a towel to dry the hair. Instead use paper towels or a cotton tee shirt to gently squeeze out the water. This works wonders. A towel is too harsh and disturbs the natural shape of the curl.
- Next, use a curl defining gel which provides frizz protection and moisture. Allow the curls to dry naturally (your best choice) or use a diffuser, but DO NOT touch while drying – this disturbs the drying process and can cause frizz.
- When the hair dries with the gel, it will cause it to harden (this is normal). This is the sign it’s time to crunch the hair to reveal soft, frizz free curls.
- The final step is to flip your head over and crunch the hair upward to create volume and set in place.
Devachan’s method is simple and it works. A junior stylist at this salon costs approximately $75 and a senior about $120. Products cost approximately $20 per bottle. Remember, one benefit to curly hair is that it doesn’t need to be cut often. If you follow Devachan’s regime you will get beautiful hair – guaranteed!
