Relax With Reiki

When yoga becomes a routine rather than a relaxing exercise, and when meditation starts to feel like a lonely experience rather than a calming one, it might be time to try Reiki. This Japanese relaxation technique developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui is defined as a “special form of hands-on energy healing.” The receiver sits on a chair or lies down on a couch, while the healer, the Reiki Master, touches the body’s energy contact points, or chakras; shoulders, chest, hands, knees, and feet. This ancient form of stress reduction aims to channel the energies that balance the chakras and “help to improve the flow of chi, or life force, leading to a stronger immune system, emotional balance and inner peace.”

CitySaheli was curious to experience this type of healing and met with British Reiki Master Gina Baksa who has a Diploma in Healing from the College of Psychic Studies and received her Reiki Masters initiation at the Alexandria Healing Center in London. Her work attempts to “connect, integrate, and align the receiver’s physical, emotional, and mental bodies,” in the hope of producing “profound inner peace and relaxation.” She told us that the practitioner acts as a channel for the energy, while the client receives the healing. But just like with other forms of relaxation techniques, like meditation or yoga, we felt very calm after a Reiki session and the stress of everyday life was considerably reduced. While the experience varies from one person to another and it is difficult to evaluate its individual long-term benefits, Reiki is definitely worth a try if you are in the need for a different type of relaxation method.
