Summer is great time to wander, explore and try new things. Now, you can escape the city’s tall buildings and bustling streets without leaving the island. Check out New York’s new getaway, the West Side promenade.
The City has done a fantastic job revitalizing the west side with bike trails and running paths that extend along the length of the island. The walkways all along the river, with unique rest areas surrounded by flower-filled gardens and piers that stretch far into the Hudson, are not to be missed. Restaurants, each with their own character, have opened along this edge of the island for you to lounge and soak up the extraordinary views.
So, grab a picnic basket, rent a bike or get your running shoes on, and check out the West Side promenade…it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
CitySaheli strolled down the beautiful promenade, from the Upper West Side to the West Village. Check out CitySaheli Picks for a great time.
79th Street Boat Basin: Stop here for a drink and watch the boats sail from the nearby marina. An upper west side legend, the Boat Basin is a trustworthy spot to enjoy a warm summer evening. On a hot night, say yes to their margaritas.
Pier i Café (at West 70th Street): Grab a table and you won’t be disappointed. This self service joint offers a wide variety of food and drink. The burgers and fries are unbeatable, the beer selection is impressive and the white wine sangria is to die for. This is a great spot for larger groups, as you can often grab a table without a long wait.
Frying Pan: Built in 1929, this barnacle encrusted salvaged boat is now home to one of the best places to grab a drink and burger. A unique atmosphere that assures a great time.
The Highline: Recently opened, this re-designed park that lies on an old railway, is bringing back many oohs and aahs to this neighborhood. It’s not only a beautifully designed urban park, but the highline has revitalized the surrounding area. Be sure to swing by and check out the new swanky hotel, the Standard, while you are there and have a seat on the sunken observation deck.
West Village Promenade: Further south, beyond Chelsea Piers, you will find long piers with shaded white canopies that lead into the river. Chill, grab an ice-cream, do yoga, set up a picnic or do as your heart desires. You’ll find lots of local New Yorkers doing just the same.
