The American India Foundation, New York Young Professionals Chapter, is hosting their annual kick off party, Your Voice for the Cause, on Tuesday, November 10th at Hudson Terrace. During this event, network with young professionals and help the foundation chose their new initiative for the 2009/2010 fiscal year.

With the goal of accelerating social and economic change in India, NYYPC has focused on engaging and educating young professionals about the work AIF is doing in India. Last year the group invited area young professionals to voice their opinion on the 2008-2009 AIF funding initiative. Based on consensus, NYYPC identified the Apna Clinic, an Urban Health Center for sustained improvement in reproductive, maternal and child health in the slums of Mustafabad in Delhi.

The group now wants your help to decide this year’s initiative. The choice for next year is between three NGOs – Anudip, Saath and Nidan. Anudip creates livelihood opportunities for the impoverished by funding and shaping rural training centers that develop skilled professionals and entrepreneurs. Saath makes human settlements more equitable living environments by running programs focused on capacity building, health, education, physical infrastructure improvement, access to resources and services, slum development and natural resource management. Nidan develops institutions and processes that eliminate exploitation and provide opportunities for fuller growth to unorganized/migrant workers, street vendors, waster pickers, and other informal sector workers.

Don’t miss the chance to voice your choice for this year’s cause!

Date: Tuesday, November 10 2009
Time: 7PM to 11PM
Location: Hudson Terrace, 621 W. 46th Street, New York, NY 10036
Online Tickets: $25 | Door Sales: $35

Ticket includes one free drink & hors d’oeuvres

Are you starting your own business and finding it tough to compete with all the large department stores? Do you miss going to local mom and pop shops where you can find unique products and receive personal attention? If you fall into either category, check out Shustir, a virtual bazaar with numerous individual storefronts. According to Nielsen Online, only a reported 44 percent of small businesses have a website. Online buying is increasing yearly and Shustir’s goal is to bring small businesses closer to their customers on the Internet.

Shustir’s powerful retail platform caters to small businesses, start-ups, entrepreneurs and people who are looking to recreate themselves. The site’s “marketplace” lets you browse through businesses by geographic location or service provided. If you own your own small business, this is a great place to set up shop because it increases your visibility. The free “classifieds” section provides a forum to search for or post services, items and job openings. The site also provides a “community” space where you can share ideas with entrepreneurs like yourself.

Shustir was started by two women, Shu Kim and Khanh Pham, who formerly worked at Lehman Brothers. The founders believe that you need to “think outside of the box” in order to survive in today’s marketplace. Shu and Khanh recreated themselves from corporate real estate professionals to online entrepreneurs by developing this platform to help local businesses.

Shustir officially launched at the end of May 2009 and already has more than 14,000 storefronts, many of which are women-owned. Setting up a site is free and there is a $25 monthly fee to use the ecommerce functionality.

So whether you are looking to support local businesses or start something on your own, check out Shustir, it’s likely a great resource for you!

Urban Girl Squad, a live social networking group for women in NYC, brings young women together in social settings so they can connect and make friends, while having a good time. The group offers private events each month which involve taking advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Founder, Amanda Hofman, has been planning these monthly events since January 2008, some of which included African dance lessons, jewelry design, wine tastings and cooking classes.

Sandal Making at Bendel’s

Just in time for the summer, Urban Girl Squad’s next exciting activity involves making custom sandals with designer Tuccia de Capri on Wednesday, July 8th (6pm), at Henri Bendel.
