Playing cards and gambling are both popular pastimes in South Asia. Women often form groups known as Kitty parties and play card games such as Teen Pathi (similar to 3 card Poker). Today, poker has become a favorite activity for many and is a great way to socialize, network, improve your analytical skills and even make some money. CitySaheli looked into the world of poker and provides you with the skills you need to ante up!

Poker Today

Poker is a great game to play and can be a lot of fun. Movies like Rounders (1998) and Run (1990) inspired a whole new generation of younger players, some of whom play exclusively online. Today, professional poker stars earn megabucks, and pull money and viewers to casinos across the world. It’s hard to imagine that when the Poker World Series began in 1970, there were fewer than 50 poker tables in all of Vegas and today millions of players are enjoying poker in the casinos and online.

Back to School

For those of you who are interested in learning more about Texas Hold ‘Em we turned to professional player Blake Eastman, 24, Psych Professor and founder of SchoolofCards.com for advice. Eastman has been playing poker since the age of 8, and turned pro last year. Eastman biggest earnings in one game totaled over $60,000.

“Poker has given me so much,” Eastman told us. “I am an entrepreneur at heart and the game has given me the financial foundation to actively pursue several business ventures. Poker requires an incredible amount of thinking, and the game has made me significantly more analytical. Poker has also allowed me to meet some amazing people, especially through teaching at School of Cards.”

CitySaheli took a poker crash course with Eastman and went through the finer points of the game, from best table positions, to blinds to watching the pot. Some of the tips we learned from Eastman and while playing the game were:

- Always watch the pot (the money in the center of the table).

- Keep an eye on what the other players are doing. Don’t just focus on your own hand.

- Don’t play every hand. It’s ok to fold more.

- Don’t bluff just to bluff. Think about the situation and the people you are playing with when deciding whether to bluff your hand.

- Don’t be afraid to get out of a hand. Don’t feel you have to stay in it because you’ve already put a lot of money into the pot. Just because you’ve put in a lot doesn’t mean you’ll win – why put in more?

Practice Your Poker

Blake Eastman recommends reading Phil Gordon’s Little Green Book for beginners and told us: “Read as much as you possibly can and make sure you develop a solid group of friends with whom you can discuss poker with and exchange ideas and strategies, and most importantly play, play, play.”

CitySaheli knows that most resolutions are made to be broken, however we are here to help avoid any future guilt by helping you set SMART goals from the start.

SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely

Remember that even if you stray from your New Year’s promise, it’s okay to restart since your resolutions are there to better yourself. CitySaheli has outlined some common resolutions and some ways you can make them stick.

CitySaheli has full faith that you will accomplish your goals once you set your mind to it. We encourage you to evaluate your goals periodically, at minimum quarterly, but if possible on a weekly schedule, so you can measure progress in a timely manner. Let’s resolve together to be even more fabulous in 2010! Happy New Years and let’s make 2010 a good one!

Go on the latest Fad Diet

Most fad diets yield temporary results which will not get you to your goal of effective weight loss. Instead of going on a diet this year, resolve to make healthier choices by adopting a new lifestyle. In addition to taking away high calorie and fatty foods, add healthier options to your plate. For instance, you can substitute fresh fruit with yogurt for breakfast instead of the usual Venti Caramel Macchiato, or have a light salad for lunch instead of the Chipotle veggie burrito bowl, or drink sparkling water instead of soda for the same carbonated feel. Little changes go a long way and although you may not see immediate results, this lifestyle change will benefit you in the long run.

Hit the gym everyday

Near New Year’s , the gym is packed with people with promises to gym daily, however we quickly see much less attendance by the end of January. Instead of vowing to go everyday and making the gym a chore, try incorporating it with your social calendar. Take a dance class with your significant other or hit up a kickboxing class with your girlfriends so you are active and social at the same time. Research shows that having a partner in crime at the gym will make you go more often and stick to a routine. So, instead of meeting your girlfriends at a happy hour at the local pub, be sure to organize a girl’s night out at lotus hour at the nearest yoga studio in 2010!

Keeping in Touch

We applaud your initiative. This is a terrific resolution but hinges on a timely response. The best way we know how to stay on track with this resolution is to set aside time each day to catch up with a few of your family and friends. It’s not a chore, but having some organization goes a long way. Setting up a calendar with important dates in your phone or email is our top pick for enabling this goal. The more systems you can devise to remind you of upcoming dates the better the chance you will actually get around to shipping those cookies to your niece at camp or calling a friend who moved away.

Charity Work

It’s always good to give back and it couldn’t be easier to achieve this goal with the abundance of resources and common interests amongst your friends. You can incorporate your personal hobbies and staying active in the mix to make it an enjoyable time all around. Urban youth activities are common in NYC and firms like MindsMatter.org make it easy to participate in various programs early Saturdays to avoid conflicts with the rest of your weekend. Similarly, you can grab a friend or few, and pick up specific activities (basketball, feeding the hungry, arts, tutoring, etc.) as part of NYCares.org, which are offered at various times. Also explore the various programs offered through work and make it a work charity event.

2009 is wrapping up and the big question remains…what are you doing for New Year’s? If you are in the NY area, and aren’t sure what to do, CitySaheli found some great ideas to ring in 2010.

From all of us at CitySaheli, Happy Holidays! Take this time to spend with family and friends. We will be returning with our daily newsletter in 2010.

For the Bollywood Saheli

If a Desi Party and Bollywood music is what you desire, NYC hosts plenty of events with predominantly Indian music. Some parties that sound great are Kemia and PT212. Fontana’s is one of the only places to have a Desi band. Tickets start at $60. Click here for more information on Desi parties in NYC. For the Party Saheli

We’ve seen DJ Sharad at weddings and other huge events, and on New Year’s Eve he is spinning at La Pomme (the old Ultra). Space is limited so be sure to bring an extra pair of dancing shoes. Tickets start at $95. Click here for more information on this event.

For the Outdoorsy Saheli

Just an hour and a half north of Manhattan, Mohonk Mountain House over looks the beautiful Hudson Valley. Here you can cuddle up by the fireplace, take a hike along Mohonk Lake and sip a glass of champagne or hot chocolate as you ring in 2010. The spa is one of the best in the country, so get ready to be pampered in one of the most beautiful settings in the North East.

For the DIY Saheli

Forget the club madness and throw your own New Year’s Eve soiree. Invite as few or as many people as you would like. Give this New Year’s party a twist with a special theme to spice things up. And remember, if you get tired of doing it yourself, many bars open up after midnight, so you can always move the party elsewhere.

For the Risky Saheli

Viva Atlantic City! Atlantic City has been increasingly popular after the opening of the Water Club and the revamping of Caesar’s Palace Mall. You can try your luck at the tables and/or dance the night away at one of the many clubs. Traveling to AC couldn’t be easier on ACES train out of Penn Station, stocked with a full bar and young-hip crowd.

For the Chill Saheli

Spending time near the ocean can be fun, romantic and memorable during the winter time. Travel as a couple or with a group of friends to the Hamptons, New Jersey Shore, Long Island Beach or another local beach getaway. Be sure your winter pad has heating, as many beach houses don’t. Bring your most recent Netflix and spend the weekend relaxing with loved ones, sipping cocktails and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze.

Strapped for cash this holiday season? CitySaheli scoured the city and the web for some quick fixes to cut your spending during the holidays and into the new year. You can use these savings to splurge on holiday presents or score yourself a vacation early in 2010. Whether you love curling up with movies, books or music or enjoy drinking with your friends at the local watering hole, we’ve got you covered with free means to do all these things. Our tips and tricks will help you maintain your exciting lifestyle and help keep your money in your wallet.

Free Music

iTunes has embraced the spirit of giving by compiling a delightful ‘Holiday Sampler’ with old classics by new vocalists. The best part is that they are giving away this divine 21-song album away for free THIS week.

Every Tuesday, Starbucks gives away one free iTunes song. You don’t need to make a purchase to acquire the free song. The store usually has little cards at the register, and your kindly barista won’t judge you for grabbing one on the go. Make sure you redeem the code on the back before it expires—typically 3 months from the date of release. A great way to hear new music and step outside the comfort zone of your favorite genre – and at no cost!

Free Booze & Art

My Open Bar brings you weekly listings of free open bars in New York City. These deals are prone to time restrictions and usually don’t include top shelf alcohol, but it’s FREE.

One Art World provides a calendar of events in Chelsea and downtown art galleries that host receptions of new installations with free wine and/or beer. Typically, Thursday between 6-9pm is the hottest night to hit these events. You could fashion a gallery hop with your friends to see some art and sip some wine.

Free Food

Wined and Dined presents an extensive list of venues broken down by neighborhood to help you save big on tasty treats. Check the site frequently for savings on food and drinks in New York City.

Free Books, Movies & More

Remember when you had a library card? Well, log onto New York Public Library (NYPL) and get yourself one stat. There are multiple locations in Manhattan and the other boroughs. You can borrow DVDs, CDs, and books for free. Instead of spending a fortune at Barnes & Noble or on Amazon, take a walk to your local library branch to borrow books. Save space in your home and avoid the dust accumulating on your stacks of old paperbacks. You can renew DVD rentals at no charge as well. So cancel your blockbuster/Netflix membership and reallocate that cash to your Starbucks habit!

This deal isn’t limited to NYPL. No matter what city or town you call your own, they have a public library, so go get yourself a shiny new plastic card now. Just make sure you return materials on time or you will end up spending more than you saved.

Cheap Cultural Pursuits

Every museum has free hours of admission. Just check out the museum’s website before heading over to explore new art and marvel at old Masters. CitySaheli recommends Museo del Barrio which just reopened after a long reconstruction to peruse some terrific Puerto-Rican and Latin American art. The Met operates on a donation basis which means that the listed fee is a recommendation not a requirement for entry. Target sponsors ‘Free Saturdays’ at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Get Fit for Less

Fight holiday pounds before they pack on by securing a two-week membership to New York Sports Club for just $19.99. No strings. No commitment. If you’re not sure you will go often enough to make it worth your while, test out that theory with this short two-week commitment.

Yoga to the People wants to make the practice available to everyone. They operate by donation, so put what you can in and pass on the pot. Many other studios offer free first sessions or even a cheaper rate for a weekly pass. CitySaheli likes Laughing Lotus for their $20 unlimited yoga for a week for first-timers.

Here’s our list of the top apps every Saheli should have!

1. A Bartending App

As Sahelis we like to throw (and attend) many parties. What better way to ensure that your party’s drink list caters to everyone than to have thousands of drink recipes in the palm of your hand. That’s why CitySaheli recommends Party Pro Lite as our favorite bartending app for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Of course, it is just one out of a number of available applications that provide you with drink recipes, but we find this one to be the most user friendly and its free! To download Party Pro Lite click on the iTunes button below.

You can also check out weDrink, a very useful and affordable (only $0.99) app that creates fun and exciting drink recipes with the ingredients you already have in your apartment. weDrink even has loads of available drinking games to help you get your drink on! Finally, after all the fun you will have making Tequila Bang Bangs and playing drinking games, weDrink will help you get home safe with a list of local cab numbers since it can identify your current location. To downloard weDrink click the iTunes button below.

2. A Barcode Reader App

Have you ever seen a dress at a store that you saw online, but can’t remember where it was cheaper? Well, there’s an app to help you with that. Use RedLaser to scan UPC codes for price comparisons on the go. This app lets you search the online prices of products you find at retail stores. Once RedLaser finds the product you are scanning, you can even send it to yourself or a friend. The product works on most products, including groceries, books and DVDs. The RedLaser app is a great low-cost app (only $1.99) that will make sure you never overpay for anything ever again. To start shopping smarter click the iTunes button below.

3. A Calorie Counter App

If you’re out often and don’t have time to cook, counting calories can be a nightmare. A calorie counter can help you ensure that you keep your figure. We recommend the MyNetDiary application for serious calorie monitoring. This free app works in conjunction with the MyNetDiary.com web site, which has over 88,000 foods in its database, provides diet analysis and planning tools, advanced charts, and reports that you can easily export into Excel. If you have a daily caloric requirement that you want to meet, or you are looking for a sure way to lose weight and help yourself feel great, you need this app. To start looking and feeling better, click the iTunes button below.

If you want an app with a larger database, try the LiveStrong Daily Plate Calorie Tracker. This application costs $2.99 and works on the iPhone, the iPhone 3G, and all generations of the iPod touch. The application does not require that you have an account at LiveStrong.com to search for the nutritional information of 500,000+ foods in its database. However, if you do have an account with LiveStrong.com or The Daily Plate, your tracking information will be synced from your device back to the website. You’ll also need an account if you want to calculate your daily calorie target for your weight-loss goal. To download this app click the iTunes button below.

With 28 states, six regions, 16 official languages, a multitude of religions, and over a billion inhabitants, India is one of the most diverse countries on the planet. And its rich food culture is no exception. From the dry north and the desert filled west to the tropical southwest, India’s various regions offer a wide variety of culinary experiences. And for those who are curious to try some of these local delicacies, there is no need to leave Manhattan. CitySaheli has put together a non-exhaustive list of NYC restaurants serving Indian regional cuisine. Enjoy!

Punjabi cuisine is known for its rich and heavy delicacies with lots of milk, cream, and ghee, as well as onion, garlic and ginger. A lot of Indian food found at western restaurants is actually from this northwestern region, like tandoori chicken, paneer and biryanis, as well as naans and pakoras.

Bhatti Indian Grill on “Curry Hill” serves all types of dishes from Punjab, a region they like to call “the land of plenty.” From lamb and seafood to mushrooms and pineapple pieces, this Gramercy grill throws both veggies and meats on to the ‘Bhatti’ and serves them with a large choice of naans and raitas.

100 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY
(212) 683 4228

Goan gastronomy is influenced by four hundred years of Portuguese colonization and its location by the Arabian Sea. Fish, seafood and coconut are all musts in Goan cooking, along with milder specialties like kalputi and bhaji. Christian influences are seen in meals like pork vindaloo and the vegetable stew known as khatkhate.

Brick Lane Curry House on the East Village’s “Curry Row” got its name after the famous street in London where some of the best Indian curries in England are consumed. While this restaurant serves a wide variety of Indian dishes, they have a Goan option with green chilies and coconut combined with a choice of fish, shrimp, meat or veggies.

306-308 East 6th Street
New York, NY
(212) 979 2900

Gujarati goodies include vegetarian dishes like tomato, potato, eggplant, and squash curry. Famous favorites from this region include kadhi, a soup with yogurt and chickpea flour, puri or puffed wheat bread, and toor daal.

When you enter Vatan restaurant, you step into a whole new world. A massive pinkish statue of Ganesh overlooks the spacious seating area with cozy booths and hand painted tables. Vatan is all vegetarian and offers a four-course prix fixe menu for $31, which consists of an appetizer, a choice of Thali, and dessert with chai.

409 Third Avenue
New York, NY
(212) 689 5666

South Indian savories can be spicy! The region is known for using a lot of pickles, chilies, tamarind, garlic, and oil. A local must is the delicious dosa, a protein rich crepe made of rice and lentils and filled with various veggies!

Madras Mahal in Curry Hill is known for its delicious dosas. If you have a sore throat, be sure to start with the rasam, a tangy tomato broth that is sure to clear anything up. The paper dosas are larger than the tables here. Be sure to try the Mysore Rava Masala Dosa. The potatoes melt in your mouth, you will definitely coming back to Madras Mahal for more.

104 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY

Chapter I: Curry Hill - New York symbolizes the melting pot of the world and India is well represented in this mix. The New York area has several small South Asian shopping meccas that allow you to experience the markets, the food and the ambiance without having to travel too far.

CitySaheli’s first stop is Curry Hill. Who says you can’t get a taste of India without actually going there?

The Insider’s Guide to Curry Hill

Appropriately named “Curry Hill” for its many restaurants and spice shops, this district found on Lexington Avenue, between 26th street and 29th street, is lined with various eateries, grocery stores and specialty boutiques. You’ll likely find many starved Indian cabbies stopped here to replenish and the smells will bring you back to the streets of Delhi or Mumbai.

Eat.

Curry Hill has a mélange of different South Asian cuisines. Whether you are in the mood for a quick bite like a khati roll or traditional South Indian cooking, Curry Hill will not disappoint!

Dhaba: Recently opened, Dhaba serves delectable North Indian cuisine and already has a loyal customer base. This place provides an ambience that’s new and refreshing for Curry Hill. CitySaheli ♥s the kebabs and pav bhaji here. Dhaba will surely satisfy the carnivores and omnivores out there!

Dosas, Dosas, Dosas: A favorite South Indian delight, dosas can be found in the many South Indian Curry Hill spots. CitySaheli’s picks: Saravana Bhavan (it’s a chain in Europe!), Madras Mahal and Pongal. For more information, read CitySaheli’s article on Dynamic Dosas in NYC.

Buy.

Sometimes you just need that Fair and Lovely cream your mom got you hooked on. Curry Hill’s many mini markets are fully stocked with Indian products, food, magazines, newspapers and more.

Summer is great time to wander, explore and try new things. Now, you can escape the city’s tall buildings and bustling streets without leaving the island. Check out New York’s new getaway, the West Side promenade.

The City has done a fantastic job revitalizing the west side with bike trails and running paths that extend along the length of the island. The walkways all along the river, with unique rest areas surrounded by flower-filled gardens and piers that stretch far into the Hudson, are not to be missed. Restaurants, each with their own character, have opened along this edge of the island for you to lounge and soak up the extraordinary views.

So, grab a picnic basket, rent a bike or get your running shoes on, and check out the West Side promenade…it promises to be an unforgettable experience.

CitySaheli strolled down the beautiful promenade, from the Upper West Side to the West Village. Check out CitySaheli Picks for a great time.

79th Street Boat Basin: Stop here for a drink and watch the boats sail from the nearby marina. An upper west side legend, the Boat Basin is a trustworthy spot to enjoy a warm summer evening. On a hot night, say yes to their margaritas.

Pier i Café (at West 70th Street): Grab a table and you won’t be disappointed. This self service joint offers a wide variety of food and drink. The burgers and fries are unbeatable, the beer selection is impressive and the white wine sangria is to die for. This is a great spot for larger groups, as you can often grab a table without a long wait.

Frying Pan: Built in 1929, this barnacle encrusted salvaged boat is now home to one of the best places to grab a drink and burger. A unique atmosphere that assures a great time.

The Highline: Recently opened, this re-designed park that lies on an old railway, is bringing back many oohs and aahs to this neighborhood. It’s not only a beautifully designed urban park, but the highline has revitalized the surrounding area. Be sure to swing by and check out the new swanky hotel, the Standard, while you are there and have a seat on the sunken observation deck.

West Village Promenade: Further south, beyond Chelsea Piers, you will find long piers with shaded white canopies that lead into the river. Chill, grab an ice-cream, do yoga, set up a picnic or do as your heart desires. You’ll find lots of local New Yorkers doing just the same.
